Final Notes from Stromm

I believe you should speak with Shine yourselves, but he has been a surprising and invaluable ally. In fact, would would likely know little to nothing about the Shadow Clan (SC) were it not for experiences with them.
It seems the story of the SC began long before there was any connection to this Vhaeraun cult, which, in fact, may have actually been nothing more than pawns--they at this point pawns who have probably gotten the better deal in the long run.

Shine was once the the leader of a powerful clan of ninjas in the east. His second-in-command, and the brains behind the clan's business, was his wife, whom he only refers to as 'the spider.' Although reticent about the details, Shine tells us that, in an act of betrayal and treachery, his wife poisoned the entire clan, warriors, attendants, and all of their families, and taking Shine's young daughter, fled with the clan's accumulated wealth. He apparently tracked her for years before losing her. Knowing he would someday pick up her trail again, he set out to amass a new fortune to train a new clan, and avenge those he had cared for.

As you may have guessed, it seems 'the spider' escaped to the underdark, for now Shine has found her with the Cult of Vhaeraun, seemingly as one of their leaders, or at least as an advisor--perhaps I should rather say 'teacher'-- She knows everything known by Shine, and has apparently been teaching these ways to the drow of the Vhaeraun cult. They are the Shadow Clan.

The spider seems to have connections--likely romantic ones--with the military commander, General Orgall. Shine has described him as a 'blademaster of terrifying skill,' as I believe he put it.

The other leader is the high priest of Vhaeraun, Zekhae. We have very little information regarding him, but he seems to be a man of quiet arrogance. He has only been seen once--by Snaggzy in fact: On a patrol through Modalus, Snaggzy happened upon a drow standing in the town center, bold as day, decrying Gruun and the Waste Lords. Enraged Snaggzy pushed through the crowd and demanded who he was. The arrogant sonuvabitch told Snaggzy exactly who was, followed by the title "your soon-to-be-overlord." I know you haven't met Snaggzy yet, but this sent him apoplectic: with foam spraying from his mouth and eyes the color of fresh blood, he charged this Zekhae, who, it seems, calmly side-stepped every one of Snaggzy's furious blows, and somehow managed to unclasp all of Snaggzy's armor, for in but a moment, it's been reported, Snaggzy was standing in nothing but his small clothes having a fit near to madness. Then with a touch, this priest left Snaggzy frozen as ice, unable to move anything but his crazed red eyes. Then with a 'Consider my offer,' said to the village head, the priest simply walked out of town.
Since then, we have heard nothing but stories of him, all seeming to involve trips to villages around the wastes seeking allies.

As for our missing Waste Lord, we know that Lyle is being held deep in Wilden Woods. It seems the Shadow Clan has made allies of the wild elves living there. One of my associates, a bounty hunter named Ydenzyk, was able to track him down, but he is heavily guarded. It is most certainly a trap, and most definitely a red herring set out so we will ignore what is happening with Guido Oskey. We worry for our friend, but we can't afford to save him now. We are sending Ydenzyk in alone to see if he can do it, but it is probably a suicide mission. He is insistent, however.

As you know, the army will be leaving in the morning. We plan our attack at dusk four days from tonight. As I mentioned before, we are running few on allies, and certainly on ones we can trust with a mission this dangerous and important. Snaggzy and I would do it ourselves, but the armies will only follow him, and I am needed elsewhere. We hope you are willing to help, and of course we, and probably the Wizard's Council itself--once it believes us--will be very grateful.

Why are we attacking at night, you ask? Of course--Drow fight in darkness, where we are at a disadvantage. However, we have a local root here in the wastes--gloomweed--that gives us a boost--not only does it bestow darkvision, it also vastly improves our vision in the dark over that within daylight. You will definitely need some. Unfortunately we are out.  But we can talk about that later.
For now, let's get you set up with rooms and I will have someone give you a tour of the Keep. Of course you'll want to talk to Shine. You can find him at Madame Wong's Noodle Emporium in the bazaar. You may also want to speak with Aenyorn and Goobdoodle. They will be about somewhere.

So long for now, we will speak again soon.

Vhaeraun

The Masked Lord, the Masked God of Night, the Shadow.
He is the son of Lolth, and nearly equals her level of power. However, he does not wield it openly against her.
He is the god of Drow males, seeking to break the matriarchy of Drow society and bring about equality.
He wants the Drow to return to the Undernight and dominate the other races of the world.
He seeks the reunification of all elves.
He hates dwarves and gnomes.
He is the god of thievery.
He often infiltrates thieves’ guilds or other organizations and takes them over.
He sends a region of absolute, impenetrable darkness, black cats, ravens, dead spiders, agni manis, black opals, black sapphires, blackhued chalcedony, crown of silver, hematite, horn coral, black-hued jasper, jet, black-hued marble, obsidian, black-hued onyx, black-hued pearls, ravenar, or samarskite to show is favor or displeasure and as a sign to inspire his faithful.
Has shrines in dark shallow caves or in deep groves where little light pierces.

The Wastes

Oogala: Is a village of Kuo-toa. They worship all sorts of minor gods, and a few of their warriors have accepted Gruun worship. The rest, including the priests have accepted Gruun’s power, but this is likely just lip service.

Vengen: Is a village of Lizardfolk. They have taken on Gruun worship, and pay tribute to Indell Keep. They need protection from the orc hordes to the south, and raids from the gnolls infesting the black bluffs.

Modalus:  This is a human and half-orc settlement. Some of their members view Gruun favorably, but the rest follow Gruumsh and retain strong ties to the orcs of the south.

Bamma: This is a settlement of humans and half-orcs. They are closely aligned with Indell Keep, and staunch Gruun followers. They are constantly battling the roving orc clans to the east.

Hammer Hold: This is a Dwarf city of deep mines running into the hills. Some of them trade with Indell, but overall, they are secretive.

Karhold: A village of humans and half-elves. Communication has gone dark.

Bodartia: A village on the outskirts of the desert made up of humans, goblins, kobolds, half-orcs, gnolls, and a smattering over other races. This was the main 'center' for adventurers in the wastes before the Waste Lords came to occupy Indell Keep.

Wilden Woods:  Is inhabited by wild elves, who do not welcome trespassers. They don’t like civilization and there are some who believe they have ceased worship of Corellan. It is quite possible they have allied themselves with the Shadow Cult.
