Scornubel

This page should be a glossary for all of the people and places in Scornubel to help us keep track of our new vice-ridden gaming home.

Abigail--  A fiercely independent human, Abigail is a lifelong resident of Scornubel and an independent rogue, shunning the Thieves' Guild and as a result often running foul of it. She has a band of children apprentices that act as her spies, messengers, and assistants. She is madly in love with Aenyorn but afraid to tell him because she fears that once she lets down any part of her guard she won't be able to maintain her career and keep her livelihood intact. (Aenyorn contact)

Arnold Constantine-- Newcomer to Scornubel. Likes to throw around money, of which he seems to have plenty. A warrior type who  also seems to make use of magic. DEAD! And decapitated.

Darren Phinneas-- One of Arnold Constantine's cronies.

Benson Beanpour -- Pawnshop owner. Benson is a former soldier and veteran of many battles. He is disciplined, fair, honest, and strict. His approach to pawnbroking involves asking no questions but giving a fair and negotiable price. Although he lost the hand on his shield arm to the bite of a lizardfolk fighter many summers ago, he is still a capable warrior and enforces his own debt claims when necessary. (Aenyorn contact)

Brend-- An evil druid who supplies materials to Hwang (Shine) that are used in the creation of poisons. He typically comes into town twice a month under the cover of night. He has wronged the Duke several times in the past and has a price on his head. Even so, he continues to come back. Hwang suspects he has a personal grudge against the Duke.

In exchange for his materials, Hwang provides him with opium and his pick of Lathanda's whores. Has a taste for overweight women well past their prime

Guido Oskey-- Sorcerer and member of the Wizard's Council. He hired Arnold Constantine for unknown reasons, and recently had his magical divination robe stolen by our (un)heroes at the request of Goobdoodle Pumaha.

Fat Cat Cabaret
Fat Cat Cabaret—Located at the entrance to the Eastern district’s pleasure quarter, the Fat Cat Cabaret is a wild club with vice on tap.  The main floor hosts music and dances where patrons both watch and often join in the grand spectacle. The lower level hosts high risk gambling games with cards, dice, and whatever else patrons choose to wager on.  The upper levels hold rooms for rent either by the night or even the hour (most of the Fat Cat’s dancers are unpaid and make up for it in other ways).

The Fat Cat does not discriminate among its clientele: both the high and low can be found ogling (and fondling) the scantily clad dancers, as well as crowding around the gaming tables. Though of course money will always get a patron better service, and the best seats and tables are reserved for the high rollers who most often appear wearing masks to hide their identities.

In a place where money and sex flow as freely as water, there is always the threat of misbehavior, but the bouncers of the Fat Cat, warriors from all different races, keep trouble to a minimum.

Cloyer: A high ranking member of the Thieves' Guild, he is power-hungry and looking to advance by means that are safe and likely to succeed. At heart he is a coward, but is constantly compensating for this by acts of grandiose. He is susceptible to being bribed, and his loyalty comes from a desire for self-preservation rather than from personal bonds or a belief in the rightness of the cause he serves.

Count Drake: The ruler of Scornubel. Supposedly gained his position through the help of Guido Oskey. The current relationship between the two remains cloaked in secrecy. He revels in the gladiatorial contests and often stages bouts in his private arena within Scornubel Keep. He governs with a light hand, letting the guilds control their various spheres of influence. He surrounds himself with his elite guard, The Steadfast.

Glaskanon: A sorcerer from Sombar who finds the climate of Scornubel more to his taste.  A cocky, good-looking young man, Glaskanon is a member of the wizards council but seems to be polarizing element--his friends number as many as his enemies. He is never able to hold back his tongue and gets away with it through his magic. His constant companion is the silent giant, Koge. She seems to be utterly devoted to him and obeys his every command.

Goobdoodle Pumaha--  Head of the Grand Temple of Olidammara and unique among gnomes in that he has almost no sense for appraising. His valuations are either ridiculously over or under priced. He does however pride himself on his mechanical skills and is an expert safecracker. His playfulness and love of practical jokes are very in keeping with his kind, and the temple has become a much jollier place since he started running it. (Aenyorn contact)

The Grand Temple of Olidammara-- Located in the Central District, the temple is one of the smaller ones in the city but is nevertheless surprisingly wealthy. Its priests and priestesses are known for their lighthearted high jinks while off duty, and the temple's annual Harvest of the Vine festival endears it to many of the locals. There are a series of tunnels dug underneath the temple that exit at nearby points on the main roads running through the district.

Kavorkian: Arena Master, Commander of the Fighter's Guild and Chief of the Kavorkian Stable. A grizzled old gladiator. Has the ear of the Count and sometimes provides guards. He conducts his three posts with equal diligence. Often these overlap, but he is happy to take advantage of this. He understands the delicate balance of interests in the city and respects the status quo. He does not look to expand his power but neither will he tolerate encroachments on his commands. Rumour has it he has dispatched members of his stable to deal with rivals. He is not only a stable owner but an avid fan of martial contests, often attending bouts apart from the arena. He is well known for his vehement jeers. One crowd favourite is "Die like you came into this world, screaming and bathed in blood!" Maximus is his protege and he takes a keen interest in his affairs.

Koge: A female warrior considered to be a giant among humans.  Standing at 6'10 and weighing over 250 lbs, Koge fits the bill.  Koge always wears a mask to cover hideous burn scars that mar her face. She is utterly devoted to Glaskanon and risks her life for him without thinking.

Hwang's Tea House--  Shine's front company.  Or better, Shine's front of a front of a front.  Hwang is the proprietor of a respectable oriental tea house claiming to craft perfect blends of the most famous teas, as well as keeping a wide array of oriental liquors. For customers who speak the not-so-secret password of "Mu Fanchu," Hwang also provides the 'forbidden' oriental 'Tsuashi' massage. The basement level is Hwang's massage parlor.  There is, of course, nothing forbidden at all concerning 'Tsuashi'--in fact, there is no such thing. But Hwang's apprentice Qing Xian has expertly disseminated the idea that this massage is in fact highly illegal, making it all the more desirable.  Hwang frequently makes 'secret' payments to the authorities that allow his shop to continue.

Hwang's Tea House
In a third basement level is Hwang's opium den.  This business is far more secret than the massage parlor, but in the right circles, is well known.  The high- and low-class alike come to taste of the purest blends. This is the front for which Shine actually pays off the authorities.

Shine's real business is of course as a poison maker. His Hwang persona does not get involved, though his buyers know where to make their purchases. This identity is highly guarded with only a few in the city knowing his true profession.

Which, as we all know, is not his true profession.  As a ninja, Shine keeps his comings and goings completely separate from his cover as Hwang. To his knowledge, only Goobdoodle Pumaha knows his 'true' identity in Scornubel.

Iprar Tair
Iprar TairThe star of the Fat Cat Cabaret and most likely the main reason people keep coming back. A beautiful catfolk with long black hair, few dancers can match her skill and allure.  Wainrur maintains that she is his niece, though this is rarely viewed as truth.

The Howling Dog-- A bar and restaurant near the Western District's inner wall, it is popular with members of the middle class, especially those seeking a hint of the flavor of the Eastern District without actually having to go there. It is located along Silver Street.

The Dorlfur-- Although this eatery was built with the intention of simply providing offbeat meals, perhaps partially due to its name it soon gained a dedicated clientele that were interested in exploring areas beyond their palate. It has now become a favorite meeting place and clubhouse for those wishing to pursue non-mainstream forms of finding pleasure. It is located in the southeastern section of the Central District.

Lathanda

Lathanda-- Madame of a high class brothel and secret informant to the high priest of Olidammara. She has an indeterminable age but but her extensive knowledge suggests a long and varied career.  Has been operating in Scornubel for the last decade and in that time has achieved an excellent reputation and license to socialize within the highest circles. A woman of great cunning and resources, Lathanda has invisible roots throughout the entire city.

The Mirth that Counts:
The comedy and music club owned by the sorcerer Glaskanon and run by his loyal follower, Benlin.  The club features nightly performances of scornubel’s best and brightest comedians and bawdiest storytellers. The Mirth Band also plays lively tunes, often with the accompaniment of freelance dancers—clothing optional. The owner himself, an accomplished singer, frequently makes appearances himself, cause tears of both mirth and sorrow with his masterful vocal performances.

Qing Xian Ding Dian
Qing Xian Ding Dian--  Hwang's apprentice at the massage parlor and secret acolyte of the ninja arts. He has learned to play the fool even Better than Shine himself but is clever, ruthless, and deadly.
Looks very much like a younger version of Shine and often takes on the role of Hwang when Shine is on missions. A wise businessman as well, Qing Xian handles the intricacies of Shine's muli-leveled fronts.

Stohan Oakenbough -- A halfling and currently a low-ranking member of the guild but Stohan is looking to rise quickly through whatever means possible. The concept of honour among thieves holds no water for him and he is never to be trusted but is often useful when one is looking to spread rumours or take other unscrupulous actions that would be best left untraceable. He is also obsessed with his low halfling stature and is constantly trying to score, in whatever way he can, with human women. (Aenyorn contact)

Vorg-- Captain of the Eastern Watch. He and several of his men are (not so secretly ) dope fiends and frequent Hwang's (Shine's) massage parlor. He's a ruthless badass and keeps the status quo (rather than the peace), maintaining what goes for order in the seedier part of the city. Shine has been training with him in exchange for opium.

Captain Vorg knows of Shine's illegal poison trade but likes the foolish old coot so he keeps it secret. He does not know Shine's secret identity, but rather thinks he is a bumbling old fool futilely attempting to learn how to fight.

Wainrur HaisThe fat cat of the Fat Cat Cabaret, the proprietor and ringleader of the opulent gambling and entertainment house.  Always a jovial, ebullient host, few notice the intelligent and greedy glint hidden in every tooth-filled grin.

Silver Street
Western District-- This is where the wealthy keep their estates and is the seat of government for the city and surrounding countryside.  Most residences in this area consist of sprawling, walled-in grounds. Silver Street is a wide boulevard running from the town square straight west through the center of this district and acts as the main hub for the financial and shopping districts.  Guardsmen are posted on pedestals at every major intersection with frequent patrols through the side streets.  At night the main shopping areas are well lit with torches.

Central District-- Primarily the temple and artisan district, this area of the city also contains a number of important businesses and is where many of the city's merchants make their home. Its central square is where Gold Street becomes Silver Street, and the phrase "I'll see you where gold turns to silver" is a common one among Scornubelites setting a meeting point.

Eastern District
Eastern District--  This is the underbelly of Scornubel, full of gambling dens and whorehouses.  The dirtiest industries are also confined to this quarter--the tanners, fish mongers, and butchers all carry out their trade here. Various unsavoury wares, such as boosters and poisons, can be acquired here. An underground slaving industry operates here, often providing warriors and sport for the Arena. The Thieves Guild control a large section of the district and have a long understanding with the West Watch. Locals of the Central and Western Districts often bypass this area when entering and exiting the city. All visitors would do well to guard their purses as pick pockets plague the area. Indeed, many tourists have to come to see the infamous sites of the Eastern District only to never be seen again.
